Max Atkinson made his name analysing the speeches of top politicians, finding that they used a number of very particular techniques to move their audience and consistently generate applause.

In the 1980s, the TV programme ‘World In Action’ challenged him to take ‘an absolutely petrified’ housewife with no experience of public speaking, and train her up using his techniques, to see if she could generate applause as she addressed a major party political conference.

Her transformation is incredible, and (complete with brilliant 80s TV title sequence) the resulting 28 minute programme is essential viewing for any improving public speaker…
